Who is Pilarinos? Somehow he is connected to SNMM. He was arrested in BC for a gambling related incident. Did not see him on the officer list from the SNMM website. Hope this isn't important news.

Political storm swirls in Canada over gambling raid

VANCOUVER, March 4 (Reuters) - Confusion and controversy reigned in British Columbia politics on Thursday following a police raid on the home of Premier Glen Clark in a gambling probe.

The leader of Canada's third largest province has denied wrongdoing, but some political opponents have called on him to step aside.

Clark's attorney accused the Royal Canadian Mounted Police of ''terrorizing'' Clark's family by staging the raid on Tuesday night and the media for reporting ''misinformation and scurrilous rumors.''

''How do you expect good people to run for government when they are treated in such a manner as this?'' asked David Gibbons."

The Mounties said Clark is not accused of criminal activity in the warrant authorizing the raid, but have refused to say what they were looking for at his Vancouver home.

Authorities said the raid was connected to an investigation of licenses for charity gambling. Officers this week also raided the offices of the provincial department that handles gambling and charity casino applications.

Clark, premier since 1996, is a neighbor of Dimitrios Pilarinos who received conditional provincial approval for casino operation at a hotel in Burnaby, despite strong objections by officials in the Vancouver suburb.

Pilarinos was also one of several people arrested on Tuesday in a raid on an alleged illegal high-stakes poker operation at the hotel. The RCMP said the time of two raids was a coincidence.

Clark maintained a low profile on Thursday and has said he cannot comment about the probe because of the ''legal process.'' His supporters focused their attack on how a television station found out about the house raid.

The station said its reporter received a tip and happened to arrive at Clark's home at the right time. The RCMP said is investigating if one its officers tipped off the station.

Opposition leader Gordon Campbell complained Clark has not adequately explained what is going on. ''What I would like Mr. Clark to do is answer three or four straightforward questions in a straightforward manner,'' the Liberal Party leader told Reuters.

Campbell said British Columbia had no business giving a casino license to the business group that includes Pilarinos, which is also associated with an Internet gambling and pornography provider Starnet Communications (OTC BB:SNMM - news).

Gibbons said Clark was not involved with the license approval and threatened to sue any news organization that reported otherwise.
