"Occasions of sin": Now there was the seriously slippery tightrope. Avoidance was a must, as I recall; figuring out what they were, aside from the obvious, could take one into all sorts of musings that were in themselves "iffy" territory. As for being an occasion of sin.... One could get a headache wondering if an article of clothing that was flattering but possibly a bit provocative could make one the equivalent of the Scarlet Whore of Babylon if it elicited impure thoughts in one's hapless date.

Remember how if an impure thought just occurred to you, unbidden, it wasn't your fault or a problem. If you pursued the thought, however, you were in trouble. I marvel at the mind games some people must have played with themselves.

It used to astonish me that we were supposed to be so grim in our avoidance of the sexual and still manage to marry and have children. (Not even approaching the contraception issue yet!)

I wonder if the Catholic Church--and, by extension, Christianity--would have been so wound up about sex if Saul of Tarsus had not had an epileptic attack that day?
