One of the things I've found hardest to get used to about third world living is the ubiquity of servants. It is only fairly recently that I've given in and hired some, and even then only on the insistence of other parties in the house. I am not, frankly, very good at managing them; I tend to be too easy, and to get taken advantage of. But there is a very real feeling of guilt there, even when I upset the neighbors by blowing the wage curve on the high side. Something just doesn't feel right about it. Vestigial political correctness, I suppose, though I have to admit that it does make life easier in some ways.
