I wouldn't pay much attention to Mighty Mizzou. He doesn't understand this market, he doesn't understand Cisco, he is fully invested in ASND only and therefore his statements are very biased. The only place switches exist on the internet are for transport...where they have been for a while now.

Now, to your question. The internet transport backbone is migrating to layer 3 switching which essentially takes routing and moves into a hardware process. Cisco's has a number of layer 3 switching products that are being deployed to meet this market such as the 8500 product line....not to be confused with Mizzou's position that ATM switches were being used in this segment...they are not.
