I must object

A NOVL buyout would be good for NOVL, provided Schmidt was in control of the resulting entity and got more resources to plug into internet related products. HP is how many time bigger than NOVL?

The stockholders of course would benefit immediately and immensely from any takeover. I think this is a clear illustration of the differences in point of view of someone like yourself who wouldn't benefit from a buy-out because you don't own any stock and someone who owns the stock equivalents and would, like me.

That said I think you have to go back to the fundamentals of the company. It sells an NOS in competition with MSFT. IT has better products but is up against a monopoly. HP is not DEC. HP is number two in servers, ahead of IBM and behind SUNW.

I'm not sure NOVL would benefit HP. I'm also not sure that NOVL can pull off transforming itself from a NOS company dealing with IT departments to an internet company selling plug in servers.

Just some food for thought.
