Novell to show road map for Scalable Directory Services

Novell Inc. on Monday will lay out a strategic road map for the future of its Novell Directory Services, called SCADS, for Scalable Directory Services.

Sources close to the Provo, Utah, company said the event will focus on a release strategy and technical plans for the directory, but will not include hard dates for shipment of SCADS. However, the company is sticking by its plan to deliver SCADS in the first quarter, the sources said.

Sources said SCADS will be introduced on Monday as NDS V8.

Novell has been working with AT&T to develop SCADS, so it will be service provider-ready when it ships. ISPs demand highly scalable repositories that support millions of objects and have relational database capabilities, unlike enterprise directory services.

Last week, Oracle Corp. introduced its highly scalable directory, called Oracle Internet Directory, based on the Oracle8i database. At the time, Oracle, of Redwood Shores, Calif., and Novell announced a partnership to use OID as an optional data store with NDS, which would create a SCADS-level service capable of handling 500 million objects.

But Novell quickly scotched any notion that it wasn't developing its own data store for a scalable directory. Sources said the cost of a directory with all-Novell technology will be lower than one with a third party's data store.

Sources also said Novell's own data store, which is expected to be based on the FLAME database used in GroupWise, will compete with any other in terms of scalability.

Novell officials confirmed that a directory-related announcement is scheduled for Monday but declined to comment further.
