Note I didn't say "friends are more important than clients." But much of my work is in areas where retaining good relationships is in the clients' best interests if it can be done consistent with achieving the client's goals. Just settled a major lawsuit between neighbors with some, if I do say so, creative footwork; instead of hating each other for the next 10 years, they are actually talking again, even if gingerly. In divorces with kids, it is very important if possible not to destroy the ability of the parties to co-parent after the divorce is over (you can divorce your spouse, but you can't divorce your kids). Etc. Obviously I fight if my clients insist, and one I thought we had settled looks like blowing up again into a major battle, but when my clients face the reality of what "winning" in court really means in a small community, they often realize that settlement is the real victory.
