Dave:Given your "bomb" comment, I thought I would re-post something I wrote from another thread: At the end of WWII, the United States bestrode the earth, atomic bomb in hand, and could have ruled all. But it did not. Instead, it rebuilt Europe and Japan, even the hated Germany. It sent foreign aid to many countries in the Third World, and promoted programs like the Peace Corps. Through multi- lateral institutions like the United Nations and the World Bank, which it primarily funded, it helped to support medical care, agricultural reform, and industrial projects. It has tried, by its lights, to act responsibly in the world arena. |
