But people interpret this as some sort of "screw the customer" attitude, which only helps to fuel the anti-Intel hysteria.

That's exactly how I interpret it. And I'm no Intel hater - I think Intel is a great company. But they screwed up by putting narrow business-partner interests ahead of the interests of their customers.
