Michael & Don: The companies in question appear to be hardware related as Don suggested. As for creating competition or watering down Siemens' commitment to FNTN, there has been no overt sign of such an event. There are now thousands of companies involved in Internet and Intranet business. Overlap of functions is the norm. What FNTN has always professed to offer its clients is uniqueness in product packaging and pricing.
Mike - To excerpt from Mr. Grenier's "multimedia showcase" letter you referenced, I resubmit the following quote:

"(FNTN uses) Open Technology with proprietary enhancements. The FNTN platform uses, as a base, openly available hardware and software technologies. This allows FNTN (and Siemens) to take advantage of the "best-of-breed" products at the most cost effective prices. Proprietary enhancements are then "layered" onto the open platforms, providing performance enhancements and FNTN product uniqueness. When new releases of Hardware, Operating system and application software are released, FNTN can easily upgrade."

Simply put, neither FNTN nor Siemens are claiming uniqueness of product. Michael Sheppard was quick to point this out to me last year - rather, it's a question of how those products are bundled and how inexpensively and quickly they can be delivered.
