I don't think I ever fainted in church, but I brought daydreaming to an art form. My memory of confirmation was not the slap, which really wasn't a slap at all, but of trying to engage the bishop in an argument on the subject of original sin, which even then struck me as a ridiculous notion. They shut me up before I could get going, obviously; I was pretty well trained and would probably have won the argument. If there weren't parents watching I'm sure the slap would have been a solid one in my case. Not long after that my parents gave up and let me devote my Sunday mornings to fishing, as God, if there is one, obviously intended.
