I should have made it clearer in my post that it was the CEO of Rowan that cited the books.

I realize that you were quoting his statement and should have made that clearer also.

My reading of Yergin's book (a big book) was that he concluded that OPEC needed little outside help to self-destruct. A combination of factors...greed, self-interest and distrust unraveled the temporary control that OPEC held over oil prices. My apology to Mr. Yergin for over simplifying.

I'm quite sure that Yergin felt that OPEC eventually qualified as "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight" but I think he probably feels likewise about the actions of the US government(s).

The idea that the US government could pull off such a coherent and successful strategy is intriguing, and difficult to believe.<G>

I guess anything is possible?
