gary,

the hanging at shut down plagued me for months. most people i spoke to told me it was my video drivers. loading the most current drivers did not fix it.

ultimately, symantec (maker of norton utilities and antivirus software) came up with a patch. evidently, it was their software having a problem with windows. the patch took a minute to download and ended many months of concern and troubleshooting.

so, if you have any norton apps on your pc, that could well be your culprit. go to their website and download the upgrade.

if you don't have norton anything installed, i'd go back to the video drivers. additionally, you might want to try shutting off various applications first, then shutting down the machine. that may be a way to isolate the responsible program, if in fact that's what it is.

good luck, gary.
