You're right -- I wasn't clear. In the screen-saver screen in "Display Properties", there are some power-saving options: you can choose low-power standby for your monitor after so many minutes or you can choose shut-off monitor. I had enabled one of these options and it was messing things up.

If you don't have this option enabled in Display Properties, then it sounds like it is just happening spontaneously for whatever reason. You might check in Device Manager to make sure you only have one monitor listed, and you might try updating the driver.
