Hello Mohan:
Times of India piece says, "Mr Clinton had bought Stanley Wolpert's India and Octavio Paz's In Light of India, along with a ....."
I must say an excellent choice for Mr Clinton. Wolpert Teaches or taught History at UCLA. This book is one of the best books on Indian history I have ever read. he takes to tasks some other historians who do not appreciate Indian history and give its due. You have to read what he says in praise of Kalidas and his works (Shakuntala and Meghduta).
Recently, Mr. Wolpert published a biography of Nehru, another standout book. Passages comparing Nehru with Indira are really good.
Octavio Paz, Mexican ambassador to India and Noble prize winner in literature, has written one of the best books on Indian culture, a book written from heart with all the adulation. Mr Paz looks at India as she is in all its glory. Mr. Paz died not quite 6 or so months ago. His one other book "The Double Flame" traces love, sex and erroticism through world literature. Very interesting reading.
Thanks for the info. I knew Mr Clinton ran out of money, (happens to me all the time). but did not know he was buying these books.
Regards, as always. Satish
PS:In my opinion, both the books are a must for every Indophile because it shows you why you are an Indophile, and if you are not one, why you should be. |
