Ontario Hydro tests Y2K Readiness

Ontario Hydro, the largest hydro company in Canada, did a Y2K test last night(Mar 6). At 11:50 PM, all subways, streetcars, and other Hydro dependent services were stopped, while Ontario Hydro reset all their computers to 11:50:00 1999. They even suggested that ambulances and fire trucks be parked outside their garages in case the power turned off and the garage doors wouldn't open.

CFTO, the largest Toronto television station had a countdown just like new year's eve 10-9-8... with live cameras on downtown, subway stations etc.

Guess what happened!!

****** NOTHING *******

Have to admit though, even I had a bit of anxiety during the countdown. Thought I might have to cancel some of the speeches I am booked for, talking about the Y2K hype.

I really sense that the hype is dying down as more of the tests occur, and there has not been any serious problems discovered yet, by all those systems that are already operating into the year 2000 ie. travel agencies, fiscal yearends etc.

My favorite line is that the phone company's only fear is an overload of their services next year at 12:01, 2000. That's when 100 million people will pick up their phone to see if there is still a dial tone. Just like during a superbowl game when all the toilets flush at half time.
