Spreck, someone else can answer for athm, but I will answer for Roadrunner (Time Warner). When I signed on, I was an early adopter. They waived the install, (normally $40 or so). Modem rental is included in the base monthly charge of $39.95. They installed a network card in my PC which is mine to keep if I cancel, but the modem belongs to them. I added a second IP address for the second computer in our house, and each additional IP address is $10 per month. Hope that helps. Brian
