Dan,

Second effort here, my computer ate my first lengthy response :0(

I agree, the verses before and after are in the context of administration of gifts but I do see vs 13 specifying us being baptized by a Spiritual work into that one body.

Admittedly my personal bias leads me in this direction however there is much more...

In I Corinthians 1:17 Paul states... "For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel..."

The gospel is of course the good news of "salvation" and it cannot include the necessity of water baptism as essential for salvation otherwise it negates Romans 10 speaking of the righteousness of faith with Paul preaching it as above....

8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

No mention of water baptism here and yet a person is not saved without being indwelt by the Holy Spirit as established by Romans 8:9

There would be an obvious conflict in these verses if water baptism was essential for salvation. Nay good sir, not so!

Praising our Lord with you and His marvellous grace!
John

p.s horrifically large dog, would definitely be my foot.
