I can not say that I think MSFT is a great software company (based on quality, not marketing). I have wasted more time with their compilers and operating system hangups than I care to recount. I agree with you, however, the winner in the long-term will have to stress quality as we become more dependent on the reliable operation of computers. MSFT is a great marketing and financial success, I do not consider it to be a great company, however. Several other factors (about a dozen) have to be included, in my book, to be considered a great company (see for example "Out of the Crisis", by Edward Demings, MIT Press).
