Here's a section from a Corporate Research Profile I was sent in the fall.

"Vermiculite, a highly sought after industrial mineral is composed of a group of micaceous clay minerals. When heated at 800 to 1,100 degrees C, vermiculite exfoliates, changing into worm-like particles that entrap air and expand to 20 times their original thickness. Exfoliated vermiculite is used extensively in the agriculture industry as a fertilizer carrier and soil conditioner. Expanded vermiculite is incombustable and retains its thermal insulating value to 2,000 degrees F making it ideal for use in brake pads.

To date, reserves calculated to a depth of 50 feet on A-zone have totalled 144,999 tons with the deposit remaining open at depth."

I do not know who authored the material in the Profile.
