The increased emphasis on these matters is clear from recent industry announcements such as that of Sybase and Oracle Corp.'s decision to certify NetApp's approach to storage as well as Oracle's own recent unveiling of its Raw Iron appliance. Separating functions onto specific platforms is becoming more common as networks become more complex.

FYI, NTAP's filers are the ONLY NFS file system certified by ORACLE. This means that NTAP is the only device running as a Network File System that may contain Oracle databases. Until now, Oracle would only support data resident on storage directly attached to the Oracle server hardware. Same is true of Sybase, as well. These two certified NTAP after their customers, who were already using NetApp filers in this way, put pressure on them to look at NetApp's technology. Oracle (and Sybase) were both already using NTAP filers in their development labs, so they were not unfamiliar with the concept. But putting program files on filers was one thing--putting database tables was another. They tested the filers, looked at OS source code, requested a couple of minor changes ("stale handles" after system failure), and publicly announced their support for customer database tables on filers.
