> software solution (a la Inktomi) or hardware (a la NTAP). keep in mind that both inktomi and ntap are essentially software solutions that require hardware to run them. they are not different in this regard. inktomi still requires a roomful of unix or nt boxes running their software. i believe they do sell a solaris box optimized for inktomi, which is the closest they have to an appliance? ntap is selling essentially a software solution, a concept solution (eliminating all the maintenance problems of unix/nt thru the appliance approach), putting it all in a cool-looking box, but i don't think there's anything proprietary about ntap's hardware.
