I saw a video of a blue-water tug laboring to tow a crippled freighter. It was one of those "When The Weather Really Sucks" programs on Discovery. Anyway, a real stout cable was being used, and it snapped on video. Came apart like a rifleshot - but neither end made it all the way to the attached vessel. The chop in between was a marvelous brake.
