Gary, BMWs are exceptionally well built. I would concede that the japanese cars may have a lower defect rate but the quality of materials is not as high from what I have observed. A few examples would be the gauge of steel and purity ( Japanese cars are more prone to rust) . The hardware seems to be higher grade ( stronger) . BMW uses forged steel connecting rods -stronger than cast. I don't know what the Japanese use but many domestics use cast rods and crankshafts. I am not a professional mechanic its just a hobby. I have worked on Toyotas, Hondas, Datsuns -Rotsuns -g-, Nissan, Suburus, Fords, chevys, Chyslers, BMWs, Mercedes, Volkswagens, Volvo, Saab . My amateur obsevations are that German cars are more solid but I have not worked on a Lexus or Infinity to be fair. My first car and only cars have been BMWs -there is nothing quite like them and they have a loyal following. I have found them to be quite reliable . Mike
