Hear, hear - They should! MS has hurt privacy. The "cookie" invention of Netscape was a huge hurt to privacy. Unfortunately these are now water under the bridge.

I think the Intel response has to do with visibility - and the hope of being effective. The ID thing is just starting and there is a chance to nip it in the bud. From Intel's attitude though it doesn't look like this is likely to be. Instead it will be a festering sore for Intel. It will fade as an issue, but reappear with each related event.
