03/05/1999 - DOE Awards $70M for Fuel Cell & Engine Projects Chicago, Illinois - The U.S. Department of Energy has selected 16 firms and educational institutions in nine states to receive $70 million for new research on fuel cells and high-efficiency automotive engines. The awards are intended to advance the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles program's goal of having affordable, 80-miles per gallon prototype production vehicles by 2004. The cost-shared projects will focus on proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells for transportation and buildings, and new technologies for compression-ignition (diesel) and spark-ignition engines. Among those slated for fuel cell-related contracts are 3-M, AlliedSignal, Inc., Analytic Power Corp., ARCADIS Gerarty and Miller, Inc., Arthur D. Little, Inc., Energy Research Corp., Foster-Miller, Inc., McDermott Technology Inc., Plug Power L.L.C., Southwest Research Institute and the University of Wisconsin. For new engine technologies, the list includes: Cummins Engine Co., Inc., Detroit Diesel Corp., Ford Motor Co., Delphi Energy and Engine Management and Michigan State University. Three companies received multiple awards. |
