Conexant Systems (NASDAQ:CNXT - news) climbed $3.44, or 18%, to $22.13 following news that it expects to report near break-even performance for the second quarter of fiscal 1999, ending March 31, and an earlier-than-expected return to profitability by the third fiscal quarter. It was expected to lose $0.07 per share this year. Arun Veerappan, a BancBoston Robertson Stephens analyst, says 'the company's core non-PC related business is growing better than expected' and its 'imaging business has bottomed and is starting to do better after four quarters of decline.' Its PC business with analog modems is also declining at a rate lower than expected. He also thinks Conexant's network access and wireless businesses 'will in the near-term continue to report growth.'
