Mike, Looking for a phone number for Wireless Knowldge, I went to their web site wirelessknowledge.com and found very prominent display that they are working with General Magic.
RE Kevin Surace, I wouldn't expect him to say anything less, but that doesn't mean it's not the truth. I do believe Lucent will have some interesting products. I spoke to Randy Littleson this morning at Spyglass and he said they had been working with Lucent for a year now and they have demoed a working phone browser using IVR and varied graphics display over wireless connections.
He said this product can go out to any web site and gather data, but it works better when you have pre-prepared service web sites and that this would probably be the major use. The trouble is not just that web sites haven't got a standard like VoXML to conform to, it also the fact that there are just a lot of poorly designed sites.
He said while they can demo a system today, it's still a future product and he's not sure when the market will adopt it.
As you may know, Spyglass wants to be the graphic content control in a smart device. They will serve the device most compatible with the display limitations, but IVR, in this case from Lucent, will do some of the commands.
He said Lucent was only one of the companies they are working with, and some how I forgot to ask if they also worked with GM. He was well aware of Portico. I can't believe it didn't ask him if they would work together, but I was totally surprised by his call in response to an e-mail I sent.
We talked about firewalls and the problems involved with security. They are very active in WAP and hope to establish a format that will please everyone. When asked about WK's proposed authentication gateway approach, he said it has gut appeal, but may in fact not be a secure access. That has yet to be proven.
