SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 1999--
Anthony J. Navarra Named as Acting Chief Operating Officer
Douglas G. Dwyre, 66, president of Globalstar, will retire from his position, effective at the end of the month, according to Bernard L. Schwartz, chairman and chief executive officer of Globalstar. Anthony J. Navarra, executive vice president for strategic development, will serve as acting chief operating officer of the company effective immediately.
In addition, it was announced that Mr. Dwyre is to be elected to the board of directors of Globalstar Telecommunications Ltd.
"Doug Dwyre has provided exceptional leadership in managing the evolution of the Globalstar system from its infancy to the roll-out of the operating system," Mr. Schwartz noted. "He accomplished the task he signed on for in 1992, smoothly and successfully bringing together the multiple facets of the Globalstar program and positioning the company for initiation of service later this year. We are grateful to him for extending his stay at Globalstar as president beyond his planned retirement date and for agreeing to give us the continued benefit of his insight and guidance as a member of our board. We wish him well in his retirement."
Mr. Dwyre stated: "It was always my intent to remain at Globalstar until our launch campaign was well underway and the health of our satellites was assured. I delayed my retirement from last fall determined to see our satellites launched on the Soyuz rocket which, together with Delta, will complete our constellation. I am proud to have been part of the innovative and exciting Globalstar project and look forward to being an 'early adopter' of the service. Globalstar remains in the hands of an extraordinary team and is bound for great success." Mr. Dwyre will relocate with his wife, Susan, to their new home in the state of Washington immediately upon retirement.
Doug Dwyre joined Globalstar in 1992 after eight years as president of Cincinnati Electronics and four years as President of STC Submarine Systems, Inc. Mr. Dwyre previously worked for 19 years with what is now known as Space Systems/Loral, joining Ford Aerospace in 1962 where he progressed to the position of managing director of the company's satellite operations division. Loral purchased Ford Aerospace in 1990.
Anthony J. Navarra, who joined Globalstar in 1991, leads and manages Globalstar's business partnerships and marketing programs, working closely with service providers in preparation for the initiation of commercial service in the third quarter of 1999. He will assume additional responsibilities as acting chief operating officer of the company.
