All,

I ran across this article on LinuxWorld today. It is
about SGI's plans to unveil Linux on the Vis PC in May.

linuxworld.com

Also, I read a transcript of the XFree presentation at the
LinuxWorld Expo and Conference. Someone asked about XFree
support for the SGI Vis PC. The full transcript is at

lwn.net

Do a search on SGI when you load that WWW page. It is down
a ways in the text. Here is the blurb about the SGI Vis PC
for those that don't want to read the entire text.

Q: Will you have support for the SGI Visual Workstation?

A: Are you going to send me one? If you do, we'll support it.

Sounds like they are not working on support for SGI's Vis PC.
Don't know who from the XFree team was giving the presentation and
said this. But, in talking with an SGI engineer recently I was
under the impression that X-Windows development was moving along.
Perhaps it is but maybe not with XFree ?? (What is XFree ? It is
the free X-windows implementation that ships with Linux. It gives
Linux the ability to have a GUI interface). Is SGI cooperating with
a commercial X vendor like Xi Graphics instead ? Was the XFree
presenter just incorrect ? Maybe the SGI employees who read SI
can clarify this ? Maybe there is another group of volunteers working
on X for the Cobalt chip set. I thought SGI told me they were
expecting volunteers to make Linux happen on the Vis PC ?

One very interesting fact. The entire XFree code base is a
huge 105 million lines of code. Wow, that is one hunk of code.
See the presentation transcript for more on this. Wonder how
long it would take a XFree volunteer to get up to speed ?
