The Japanese market for Windows NT-based workstation computers is expected to increase by about 47% in calendar 1999 to 83,000 units, IDC Japan, the Japanese unit of International Data Corp, said on Monday. IDC said the Japanese workstation computer market in 1998 had risen a steep 123% to 56,200 units from 25,200 in 1997. The increase is due to strong demand for computer-aided design (CAD) at manufacturing industries, for computer graphics at software makers, and for trading systems at financial institutes. IBM Japan, the Japanese unit of IBM CORP, topped the list with sales of 11,100 units in 1998, up 428.6% from a year earlier, said IDC. The Japanese unit of HEWLETT PACKARD CO ranked second with sales of 9,600 in 1998, up 174.3%. NEC CORP was third with sales of 6,800, up 195.7%. (Reuters 10:36 PM ET 03/07/99) |
