General Commentary:
Net mania is back! Bolstered by huge gains in CNET (CNET 208 1/8 +40 1/8), CMG Information Services (CMGI 199 11/16 +47 1/2), eBay (EBAY 171 +21 3/4), Inktomi (INKT 71 +8 1/8), Network Solutions (NSOL 214 9/16 +40), Onsale (ONSL 47 1/4 +15 3/8), uBid (UBID 72 5/16 +9 1/8) and VeriSign (VRSN 119 +14 3/4), techs resumed the leadership role they had abdicated in early February... Dynamic movement in the volatile Internet sector restoring confidence in tech stocks, and bringing daytraders back to the fold.

Techs also got a boost when Intel (INTC 119 5/8 +5) announced that it had reached a proposed settlement with the staff of the FTC on the antitrust litigation... Proposal needs approval from the Commission, which street fully expects... Positive reaction basically a "relief rally" as marketplace wasn't looking forward to another long, contentious, Microsoft (MSFT 159 +4 1/16) like court case.

In a positive sign of things to come, participation expanding, with many second tier names participating in the advance... Poor breadth tools had been a major concern among market followers for weeks now... Though we aren't looking for a/d line to flash buy signal anytime soon, improvement in breadth stats will add fuel to the rally.

Techs really hitting their stride... If recent history is any guide you don't want to get in the way of this rally.

Not much in the way of earnings this week until Thursday when Oracle (ORCL), CMG Information Services (CMGI) and National Semi (NSM) release their results... For consensus estimates, actuals, revenue numbers and year-ago comparisons, see Briefing's Earnings Calendar.

After the close, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD 18 15/16 +1/2) warned that it would report a significant loss in Q1 due to weaker than expected shipments of K6 chips... Plans to cut roughly 300 jobs over next two years... Street already slashed estimates after company pulled out of recent tech conferences... Look for estimates to be cut again... Current consensus is for a loss of $0.09 v. year ago loss of $0.39.
Asian markets close higher.

Solectron (SLR 47 1/8 +4 5/16) and Jabil Circuits (JBL 38 1/16 +4 9/16) were the stocks of choice.
Disk-drive/storage stocks still lagging rest of sector, though EMC Corp. (EMC 111 1/2 +6 15/16) found plenty of buyers... Have yet to get any warnings from group, but based on lousy price performance over past several weeks market sure counting on at least a few negative surprises... Briefing.com not so sure... We expect favorable comparison periods, tighter cost controls and improved demand/supply equation to result in relatively decent quarter... As such, Briefing.com maintains position that group attractive to risk tolerant, aggressive growth investors seeking above average, l/t capital appreciation.
Seagate (SEG 29 1/8 -7/8) announced that it will take a one-time charge in the current quarter of about $50-$60 mln related to restructuring.

Broadcom (BRCM 66 1/2 +12 3/4) was the group's big winner, jumping on news that Morgan Stanley Dean Witter upped its rating to outperform from neutral...
