TECK AND SUMITOMO ARE STARTING WORK ON THE POGO: Teck Corporation: Underground Exploration Permits Received for Pogo Project, Alaska VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--Sumitomo Metal Mining, Sumitomo Corporation and Teck Corporation are pleased to announce that all necessary permits have been received to conduct an underground exploration program for the Pogo Project in the State of Alaska. The program will consist of driving an adit 5200 feet under Pogo Ridge to intersect the Liese (L-1) orebody in order to obtain geotechnical data for mining method determination, confirm the continuity of the orebody for mining, and obtain a bulk sample for metallurgical testing. Underground drilling will be conducted to try to confirm a possible third zone (L-3), 400 feet below the Lower Liese zone (L-2), which has been intersected in two drill holes from surface. The program will begin immediately with the mobilization of men and construction materials. A 3,000 foot long winter airstrip has been built to permit the use of larger aircraft. The program will be conducted in two phases with Phase 1 to intersect the Upper Liese zone (L-1) to be completed by the Fall of 1999. A surface drilling program to further define the Upper and Lower Liese zones will be conducted in conjunction with the underground program. A pre-feasibility study will be conducted by the fall of 1999, and a final feasibility study for the Pogo Mine Development will be completed by the end of 2000 based on results of 1999 and 2000 exploration program and engineering studies. -30- FOR FURTHER INFORMATION PLEASE CONTACT: Teck Corporation Dr. N.B.
