Re: Amati was stolen from us

That's what I was thinking the whole time while writing that post!

FNTNers Back in 1996 I discovered an emerging technology company named Amati Communications Corp. They invented DMT the ANSI Standard Line Code used in ADSL modems. ADSL allows up to 8Mb to travel along standard Twisted Pair Phone Lines. There were 2 Line codes, one by one invented by Bell Labs in the late 80's which everyone thought would dominate, and one invented by a Stanford University Professor Dr. John Coiffi (founder & CFO of Amati) DMT. I immediately saw DMT was superior, and Purchased Amati at $5. a share and some Westell and Pairgain. The first ADSL hype kicked in for a short period in early '96, Now here are some gains for you:

From Feb 96 to June 96
Amati $6 to $36
Westell $10 to 80 Split
Pairgain $12 to $120 Split

They all came back down.

Texas Instrument (which own 45% of The DSP marketshare, modem chips are DSP's) bought our Amati in Dec 97 for $20 a share.

Amati now a Wholly owned subsidiary of Texas Instruments.

For an indepth info on ADSL/DMT see an old post of mine:
