Actually, I've given that consideration since mid ‘97. The makers have had and have experienced that risk ever since they chose to go with AMD in some of their products.
I've long felt that the major PC makers, (especially Compaq), have wanted someone like AMD in their pocket as a bargaining tool. Would there be a sub-0 market with it's increased penetration if it weren't for AMD? Would we have seen the steep price learning curves had it not been for AMD? Pure conjecture, but I think not. My opinion has always been that some of the big makers will do what they can to keep AMD viable. And it's all been great for the consumer.
