U.S. Productivity - the beat goes on.........

"Q4 productivity sharply higher"

WASHINGTON - The productivity of American workers surged in the final
quarter of 1998, rising at a 4.6% annual rate. That marked the best showing since a 6.2% increase in the fourth quarter of 1992. The revised seasonally adjusted increase in output per hour of work at nonfarm businesses, reported by the Labor Department, was better than the initial estimate last month of 3.7%. For all of 1998, productivity increased 2.2%, a strong improvement over the 1.2% gain in 1997.
