Fred: Yup, there most certainly will be a series of Mars adventures, starting in 2001 and occurring over a regular series of months from that point until ~2006(this according to the Nasa press-kit, my source point) referenced via this URL:

And of course yer right that a variety of contracters will be used. BUT, specifications are pretty much drawn up at this point(at least as far out as 2002), and NiMhd seems to be the battery of choice. Reference this schematic of the 2001 orbiter:

This is not to say it won't change, but this seems to be where it stands right now. As for your "it was explained to me" statement......welll......LOL!!! Jeeez, I can't imagine ANY company acquiescing to what would be one of the most SPECTACULAR advertising opportunities one can imagine. And I'll use just one example from "days of old," remember Tang? HEH! By the way, in the press-kit the company making the current batteries is clearly named so clearly as it relates to NASA contractors sensitivity ain't an issue, eh?
Bottom Line? I don't buy it, and without proof I cannot buy it. BUT, don't take this as a damning indictment against VLNC, as you know I'm as bullish as the rest regarding their more......eh......down to earth potentials. So let's keep focused on more immediate concerns of which my "end of first quarter at the earliest" statement time now appears to be confirming. Now.....about those p.o.'s.
