New chip on the block soon
By Prashanth Hebbar Business Times Bureau BANGALORE:
National Semiconductor Corporation, the $2.5-billion US chip-maker, is preparing to launch in June the silicon industry's first-ever 'system on chip', where all components of a computer will be integrated on a single silicon chip. This means a high degree of miniaturisation, which will not only push down the size of future digital gadgets from PCs to smart cards, but also reduce costs.
The PC-On-Chip integrates all computer components such as power management system, ethernet, modem, IEEE 1394 connectivity interface (to connect digital equipment such as cameras), speaker controller, temperature sensor, super Input/Output model, MPEG Decoder, audio, graphics, Binary Input Output System (BIOS) and Universal Serial Bus (USB), all on a single silicon chip along with the core processor....
