El: ML with Lou Dobbs just did a bg piece on China and the possible effects of the scandal on trade. Right up front was an interview with EP - who seemed to be in China, judging from the backdrop. Basically he said COMPAQ was the leading computer company in China and it was selling more and more and more of everything (PC's, Servers, Storage, Services - very bullish).

The discusson went on to conclude that if the US were to try to punish China through trade, China would turn to Asian competitors of the US. Indeed, it is in US interests to sell comptuers and other goods to China and help it become more efficent, get on the internet etc.

BTW US very unpopular in UK and Europea t the moment bcaue of its unilaterla action in the Bannana War. Some small isolated communities in Scotland and elswehre will lose a large proprotion of their jobs if the US carres through its threat to slap 100% tarrifs on some goods - such as Scottish cashmere.
