Motorola and Nortel hold the early lead in the two-way cable modem marketplace

Date: Tuesday, March 9, 1999
Source: PR Newswire

WASHINGTON, March 8 /PRNewswire/ via NewsEdge Corporation -- Motorola and Nortel hold the early lead in the
two-way cable modem marketplace, together accounting for almost 80% of shipments in North America. However, there was
significant variance in market share for other regional markets. In Asia, for example, market share of two-way cable modem
shipments was much more evenly distributed, with COM21, Terayon, and Phasecom gaining strong footholds. World market
shares for the top vendors were:

Motorola: 42%

Nortel: 29%

COM21: 8%

Terayon: 7%

World shipments of two-way cable modems reached 955,000 in 1998. Of these, over half were shipped to customers in the
United States. Canada represented just less than 20% of the market, with The Netherlands and Japan also representing
significant markets. "We project annual two-way cable modem shipments to accelerate sharply in the next several years," stated
Robert Jones, executive vice president of The Strategis Group. "In 1998, cable modems were primarily a North
American-based story. While North America will continue to hold a leading position, shipments to The Netherlands and Japan
will grow rapidly. In addition, Germany, Argentina, and China will become new market opportunities." The Strategis Group
estimates that annual shipments will exceed six million units by the year 2001.

These findings are presented in The Strategis Group's newest product, dataBank:(TM) World Two-Way Cable Modem
