03/09 10:46 Lucent unveils high-capacity communications laser

MURRAY HILL, N.J., March 9 (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Inc. <LU.N> on Tuesday unveiled a new laser that can carry four times more data than other lasers and will permit much faster telecommunications and Internet access.

Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent, the world's largest telecommunications equipment maker, said MCI WorldCom Inc. <WCOM.O> will be the first telecommunications company to test the laser, the WaveStar 40G Express.

The WaveStar laser will be the first commercial system capable of delivering 40 gigabits -- 40 billion units of data -- per second on a single laser over a single wavelength on a single fiber-optic cable.

Current commercial single-laser systems have a maximum capacity of 10 gigabits per second, Lucent said in a statement.

The WaveStar laser works through a technique known as time division multiplexing, in which light pulses on and off, transmitting data along a laser beam in a fiber-optic strand. The technology allows the WaveStar laser to transmit the equivalent of 500,000 simultaneous phone calls over a single wavelength.

The laser will allow communications firms to reduce equipment storage space by up to 75 percent, providing the capacity of four 10-gigabit systems in one unit.
