To all,

I'm not a regular thread participant and I have no monies in Best Buy. Just thought that some of you might want to hear about this.

Best Buy made the local news here tonight in a most unflattering way. Seems that they have a site on the web where surfers can sign up to get a free Best Buy catalogue mailed to their home. Apparently, thousands of people have signed up for this offer. BB has the usual disclaimer somewhere on the site that personal data is secure, won't be shared, etc...

OOPS!!! Seems that when BB replied to many of the folks that signed up, an automated computer program included everyone's name and address (and maybe other personal info) in the form letter e-mail type of response. Trouble was, I mean everyone. If you signed up, not only did you get your own personal information, but the personal data from a lot of other folks, too.

A local BB representative made profuse apologies on behalf of BB, but clearly the damage was done, and many of the people that the reporters talked to were clearly upset about the whole incident. Oh well. Live and learn I guess. Caveat: Nothing in life is free! <g>
