CMGI CEO says buying Lycos is one option-WSJ Reuters Story - March 10, 1999 02:32 NEW YORK, March 10 (Reuters) - CMGI Inc . Chief Executive Officer David Wetherell said one of the many options being considered by CMGI was an outright purchase of Lycos , an Internet portal, the Wall Street Journal reported in its March 10 issue. Wetherell resigned from Lycos' board Tuesday in protest of USA Networks Inc.'s pending merger of the Internet portal. CMGI controls about 20 percent of Lycos's shares. On Tuesday, CMGI hired investment banker Morgan Stanley to explore other avenues for Lycos, such as finding other companies that might be interested in a merger with Lycos. Separately, Wetherell told the newspaper a Lycos purchase would immediately save CMGI from having to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a mutual fund. The increase in CMGI's holdings has brought it close to the threshold where it would possibly need to register as a mutual fund because of the value of its holdings.
