RE:"The general rule is that intelligence wins National
Championships. That is why teams like Duke, UNC, UCLA and
Kentucky win so often-- smart players, smart coaches...

it should be noted duke currently has 7 McDonald's all americans. UCONN in their history has had 3 (marhall, el-amin,hamilton).
coach k does not have to be as "smart" or good a coach as a calhoun who must take "2nd tier" players and make them a top seed.Duke, UNC etc can push tradition and the weather...remember college is stepping stone to pros now...we had jordan (UNC)...we had back to back (Duke) blah blah blah...you don't want to be in the snow....blah blah blah.

The Oakland A's in the 80s had rickey henderson, carney lansford, jose canseco, mark mcguire, dave parker, and pitching they had dave stewart, dennis eckersley, bob welch etc and Tonay LaRussa (Mgr) was a"genius". like yankees mgrs of the 50s. w lineup stacked w stars the managing has not much to do w it.
i would give a coaching nod to big east teams for playing "open" and faster more aggressive on your toes games than ACC who comes down and sets up a play.....boring!

big east all the way.
