In Brief: OCC: Growth Rapid In Electronic Banking
March 10, 1999

WASHINGTON, American Banker: The number of bank and thrift Web sites that offer electronic transactions more than doubled, to 258, in June 1998 from 103 six months before, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency reported.

The Comptroller's Office predicted that 15% of banks and thrifts would do so by yearend 1999, up from 4% last June. Banks offering transactional Internet service hold 40% of the industry's assets.

"A change in consumer acceptance of Internet banking services could result in widespread use of Internet banking fairly rapidly," according to the report, which is available on the agency's Web site.
