<<"If it weren't for politics, every barrel of oil would be pumped from the gulf">>
The Economist shows just how little they know about the world of oil.
While it is easy to haul oil around the world via pipelines & super tankers, it just ain't that easy to haul natural gas in them tankers.
AND there is the rub. Just as most gold miners also produce some other minerals(often from the same mine) most wells produce BOTH oil & gas. At times the production of the natural gas from these wells is so economical as to make the oil which also comes out very near free.
Natural gas is, to some greater or lesser degree, a "local use" commodity, while the oil is a world use commodity. Yes, one will see a cross border pipeline, but few(if any) cross ocean.

Wonder if the Economist also knows so little about other natural resource economics?
