The downgrade reflects concerns about a more difficult operating environment. Demand for the new IBM mainframes has been softer than some observers expected; Y2K issues remain a concern; BMC's current acquisition strategy suggests that the two companies are likely to compete more directly.

He has not changed his estimates, but this downgrade suggests that the direction of potential surprises is down. It's difficult to argue with him on these issues, for which there is no hard evidence yet. The stock is very cheap right now, but it is unlikely to show good performance until we get past these issues.
