The sales growth for the industry, and Amazon have been spectacular. The prediction of earnings upon which analysts base their price targets is a highly specualative assumption. Few are willing to discuss the basis for those assumptions: If sales do achieve the tens of billions that some analysts predict, then on what do they base their assumptions for margins? If they based their assumptions on conventional models for retail, the earnings power of Amazon.com and other e-tailers would be too high. Forget about reports from IBM, Arthur Anderson and others that suggest that e-tail margins will be much lower than traditional retail - to make any leaning toward those forecasts would doom these stocks to much lower values. The ANALS can have their cake and eat it too. Why bring in words of caution like "let's wait and see while sales and earnings materialize before we raise our target".
