I grew up in the "heat of battle" -- the infamous "haltertop wars," when indignant girls were sent home summarily suspended for impudent displays of navels contrary to the school dress code (this was followed in train by the "hotpants wars, same basic script); when blue jeans were worn with holes extending so far around the knees to the back that they held on quite literally by a thread, to where one good tug on each cuff would turn them into cutoffs.

I found the Catholic girls to be the most brazen in their flouting of authority -- perhaps it was because they were so accustomed when in parochial school to furtively hiking up their hems a few inches when the nuns were not looking, and hurriedly pasting on lipstick right out the door from Wednesday afternoon catechism.
