ITU Update> ITU strives for ‘‘maximum commonality'' FORTALEZA, Brazil—International Telecommunications Union Secretary General Yoshiko Utsumi opened two weeks of technical discussion on equipment standards for third-generation wireless systems by announcing it is the organization's goal to achieve ‘‘maximum commonality among technologies to achieve compatibility'' among future wireless telephone equipment. Frank Urbany, BellSouth Corp.'s vice president-international said, ‘‘The Secretary General's statement is in keeping with the tentative settlement reached under the auspices of the Trans-Atlantic Business Dialogue that recognized there would be a Time Division Multiple Access standard and a Code Division Multiple Access with three modes.'' ‘‘It is essential that none of our customers be disadvantaged as new and improved technologies are introduced,'' said Urbany.
